This was being talked about on a political forum I go to. I said that it's a terrible trend, but it isn't solely because of Obama haters. And it isn't solely because people love screwing with the environment or hate environmentalism.
It's because people are dicks and the idiots that do this often times have a political affiliation that opposes environmentalism. Correlation =/= causation.

Why isn't there a nationally publicized article demeaning douchbags who use their Priuss as a political statement to protest big oil?

Wow those are stupid videos. Either bad examples of rollin coal or just instances where speeding up gets you further away from a car (really?!) and labeled as "repellant" .
Here's the bottom line with rolling coal - there is no reason to do it, a properly tuned diesel doesn't ash excessively and given that diesel ash is a listed carcinogen, its only a matter of time being people start suing for getting coal rolled.

However true this trend may or not be, I detest 'rolling coal' purely on the grounds that it's asinine to purposefully badly tune any vehicle.
Add into that the drivers of said bro-trucks willfully perpetuating a stereotype about idiocy and you get a perfect little lesson in hate.
This is why we need to have mandatory national emission and safety inspections for all vehicles. Farm vehicles would meet lower emissions criteria, but, there is zero reason for anything to pollute that heavily.

I agree with this as well

Most of the people you see rolling coal aren't protesting a damned thing. They're just (mostly) rednecks being assholes. IMO, it's not much different than a lead sled with flame throwers or a muscle car doing a burnout, in attitude at least. It's just showing off. The demographic just happens to be ignorant, white southerners for the most part. Many of them don't like Obama for various reasons. I'm going to file this one under misinformed until I see more convincing evidence to the contrary.

The fact that this is what passes for journalism nowadays is deeply depressing. People can be dicks, full stop. Left, Right, Center. All dicks. Marxist hipsters in Brooklyn now riding 3D printed fixies directly into traffic to protest the American Industrial Complex. I can do it too!

Because belching coal has more visual impact than bumper stickers and the one youtube lady.

lol so can I!!! I just need a good cause...or none

I have a feeling that this article is blowing the idea way out of proportion, maybe even missing the point (like when people protest Steven Colbert thinking he's a real conservative). That said, it's not like trolling with your car is a new thing.

I ride my bike because its a good way to reduce my asthma symptoms, the other day I was riding on hampden in denver and some douche in a diesel pickup rolled coal on me, lets just say it defeated the purpose of riding my bike.

Okay, first and foremost, let me get this out of the way...
I detest the act of rolling coal. Not because of the environmental damage, or not even because of the safety hazard of drivers left in the cloud of smoke, but mostly because it is done by punk kids with zero regard to those around them.
I honestly never thought of them doing it as a political statement. That would be giving the KIDS that do it a little bit of credit for knowing what is going on around them in the world. They more than likely don't know.
I see it more as kids doing it because they can. Like ricers that add unnecessarily loud exhausts and/or bovs, or kids who build a ginormous stereo system in their cars, then cruise the parking lot with the bass turned up to OVER 9,000!!
They do it to get a rise out of people because THEY ARE KIDS!
So yeah. No political agenda. No big statements being made. Just a kid wanting to impress suzy-q in his algebra class with his wacky antics.

It was very annoying, I'm just glad I always pre-medicate with Albuterol Nebulizer Solution before I ride, It would have been 10x worse if I didn't do that.

Besides, we are all about that green, nuclear and hydroelectric power where I am from. We have to equalize our pollutants.

The stupidity—it hurts me. There is nothing political about it; it's just showing off. It's like a burnout or a loud exhaust, they do it because they think it's funny or it gets them attention. Belching smoke on a dragstrip because you're running rich so you don't grenade your engine due to the high boost is a different story. On the street, it is wannabe showing off.
I can see why people are concerned about the environment; it is essential for our wellbeing.
However, I'm not particularly fond of the government making mandatory environmental laws and telling people what to do. If an individual cared about the environment, then they would actively change their lifestyle. If I wanted an eco-friendly car, then I would buy one—I don't need the government telling me to do so. The government should have better things to do than worry about how green its citizens' lifestyles are or what they buy.
This is about the worst example of journalism I have ever seen.

In Alberta it symbolizes the manliest of man bro truck style, also no emission testing. Usually you see it while they peel away at a stop light or while trying to keep up to the people who decided to buy high performance German cars as they are passed on the highway. Don't think its politically driven its just stupidity as most of those guys can't even spell political but they sure make money in the oil patch eh.

This does seem a bit excessive that a journalist need to bring this "trend" to everyone's attention. but it is a stupid act. I drive a diesel truck and it is getting harder and harder to defend myself to people who just assume that everyone who drives a diesel truck is a douche.
For the people arguing about the lack of smog testing for these trucks I will say this. Smog laws exist, but they were done very half assed. Right now I have to take my truck in every 2 years to get smogged, where they (the smog shop) will look at my intake, EGR and Catalytic converter to see that they all have a CARB stamp or OEM stamp on them. Then they will (with the truck in park) rev the engine up to 3/4K rpm and check for black smoke. There are so many issues with this smog test its not even funny, but basically the smog equipment used for gas cars and trucks isn't sufficient to smog diesel vehicles and the equipment to smog a diesel vehicle is very expensive and thus shops don't have it. Also no truck comes from the factory with the ability to produce so much smoke at a moments notice, so all of these trucks are tuned or modified, which would be very easy to revert back to "stock" every 2 years to pass smog. I do this to my truck. I have a tuned ECM that has 5 tunes on it that provide me things such as better towing performance and fuel economy. Having a tuner is illegal so i put a stock ecm back in the truck every 2 years and put the stock intake back in and get it smogged, then remove them again because of how i like my truck to run.
It is a very dumb and childish thing to do and we should remember that the people doing this are probably immature teens or young twenty year olds that have weird sense of humors.
Another thing to consider though is this. Back in the day people used to buy hot rods and muscle cars and fit different pipes, or tires, or suspensions, or what have you to their cars because that was the "Cool" thing to do. Muscle cars are awesome and I don't know of many people that would argue otherwise. It has been said many many times that diesel trucks are the muscle cars of our times. Based on the principle that a older (01-07) diesel truck is cheap to purchase used, and the amount of power you can get for a few hundred bucks is insane. What other vehicle out there can you add $500 and reflash the computer to add over 120hp and 200ft-lbs to the wheels to? Not many i would imagine. So as annoying and dumb as these kids are with their trucks it just is the new age muscle cars, and if you ask people who were adults back in the 60's and 70's I bet you they would say the same things about how annoying and dumb the kids with the loud muscle cars were.

I would argues that its not that the people who love rolling coal hate the environment or environmentalists, but that they are just immature idiots who see this as a funny prank and nothing more. They probably aren't wise enough to realize the stupidity of their prank nor do they assume that their actions are viewed as tremendously immature.
And to be brutally honest, one rolling coal act isn't going to have any impact on the environment. hell, 1000 rolling coal acts won't make a noticeable change. But i'm not defending it or saying its justifiable but just stating its not like if we eliminate all douche bags in diesel trucks rolling coal that our ice caps will stop melting...

You said basically what I did. But to your point about environmental impact, it does have an impact. It's noticeable in the small scale, immediate area rather than global scale.
![]() 07/07/2014 at 17:00 |
|
Fair enough. I guess i was only thinking global because in my mind when I picture environmentalists (or people that people who roll coal are trying to annoy) I think of a big scale global picture, but definitely it is annoying and hurtful for a focused region when someone decides to roll coal.

Which, at that point they're just being assholes. It is literally pollution being literally pumped into peoples' faces. All because it's funny, or whatever reason they use to justify it.

Yea, personal entertainment at the price of other peoples inconvenience/discomfort. Hardly a solid argument for them.

This stuff is turning into a political statement now? I have nothing to say!
Well, apart from the fact this is just a symptom of a society (and a political system) that is so far divided that any kind of actual discussion that might lead to a compromise is seen as a sign of weakness.
